As much as anything, this shows just how much things have changed in the twentieth cntury. Based entirely on how often quotations are used, rather than an editor's arbitrary decision, we find that the politicians, philosophers, serious writers who dominate most quotation books are starting to lose out. Yes, John F Kennedy, George Bernard Shaw and Albert Einstein are here in abundance - but you'll also find Douglas Adams, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Bruce Forsyth, Billie Holiday, Steven Spielberg. Fay Weldon is there - not for any feminist philosophy, but for the advertising slogan "Go to work on an egg".

All in all, a thoroughly democratic collection - and all the better for it.
